Dandruff/Seborrheic Dermatitis

Very few adults have not had an experience of dandruff, but for some patients it can be a frustrating and persistent part of life. These loose, itchy flakes of skin are most commonly caused by a condition known as Seborrhoeic Dermatitis. Seborrhoeic Dermatitis is thought to be an immune reaction to the presence of a fungal yeast called Malassezia. We all have Malassezia on our skin, but in some people there is an increased presence, particularly on parts of the body where oil production is higher. More than just dandruff, some people may suffer from a greasy, scaly rash on the scalp, the eyebrows and cheeks, around the ears, the neck and central chest. In children, Seborrhoeic Dermatitis is better known as ‘Cradle Cap’ and is a common cause of concern in new parents. Flares of this condition are often precipitated by stress and in some situations it may be associated with other diseases such as psoriasis, Parkinson’s disease and HIV. Treatment consists of a rotating roster of topical antifungal shampoos and occasionally a weak steroid cream or ointment.

Whilst it can’t be cured, your Dermatologists can devise a treatment plan for you that will settle the flares and increase remission times. Make an appointment to discuss your condition with your Dermatologist today. Call The Skin Centre on (07) 5597 7170 or email reception@skincentre.com.au
