Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic skin disorder that can effect anyone from childhood through to adulthood. Most people experience the disease as red, thick and scaly rashes on the scalp, elbows and knees. However, it can be more widespread and involve sensitive areas like the groin, breast or armpits. Psoriasis can be frustratingly itchy and at times can be painful and bleed. It can appear for the first time after infection or weight gain, with increased consumption of alcohol or smoking, during pregnancy or having started a new medication. Many people will have a family history of psoriasis. It has been linked to other conditions including arthritis, anxiety, depression, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Overall sufferers of psoriasis have reduced quality of life and can struggle with daily activities.

Psoriasis cannot be cured, but it can certainly be effectively managed. Anybody who has had psoriasis for some time will remember the pungent smelling lotions, creams and ointments that were the mainstay of treatment over the last several decades. Whilst they still exist, and in some cases still have a place in the treatment of this disease, this millennium has provided us with a number of new topical, oral and injectable management options that will mean for some people – a psoriasis free life. Nearly every year has yielded another choice for care – particularly in the field of biologics. Many of these new immunomodulatory drugs can also be used to treat associated conditions such as psoriatic arthritis.
