Hand Dermatitis

Dermatitis refers to inflammation of the skin. When the skin of the hands is inflamed it is often due to a combination of atopic dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis and irritant contact dermatitis. Hand dermatitis is very common in certain occupations and population groups including new mums and dads, florists, chefs, hairdressers and construction workers. It often takes good detective work to single out what might be causing hand dermatitis so that the culprit can be eliminated. Patch testing may be recommended for this purpose and information regarding this process can be requested in advance. In the interim, good hand hygiene and certain topical medications are required to keep the symptoms in check.
