Hyperhidrosis

Just the thought of sweating, well….can make you sweat. Dripping hands, damp pits and t-shirts that cling to your body are familiar experiences for anyone who suffers from hyperhidrosis.  Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for excess sweating. The majority of sufferers develop these symptoms in childhood with them persisting into adulthood. Most people complain of excess sweating from the armpits, but for some patients, the hands and feet, face and trunk are just as much of a problem. More than just an embarrassing complaint, hyperhidrosis can also be a sign of an undiagnosed underlying medical condition, so anyone over the age of 25 who suddenly develops excess sweating, should consult their doctor or dermatologist. Particularly if the sweating is all over and continues on into the night. For children, sweating of the hands and feet can impede school and play and create other rashes secondary to sweaty socks and shoes. For teenagers and adults, hyperhidrosis can enhance social anxiety and affect relationships with partners, family and friends. In extreme cases, it can even influence career choices.

Whilst there is no cure for the condition, there are number of options available for management, allowing hyperhidrosis patients to regain control of their sweating. Depending on the severity and the sites it affects, your dermatologist can help with tailored selections including topical agents, oral medications and for suitable patients, PBS subsidized botulinum toxin for axillary hyperhidrosis.
