Hair Loss

Hair is important to our identity. The causes of hair loss, or alopecia, are many and varied, as is the way it can present. For some, it will appear as discrete patches of baldness, for others widespread thinning or a ponytail that has lost its natural thickness. Children through to adults can be affected, and no matter the age, the process can be distressing.  Medical illness, nutritional deficiencies, physical and psychological stress can all cause or contribute to hair loss and must be thoroughly investigated. If a cause can be identified, in some cases the hair loss can be reversed. For others, topical, injectable and oral medications will need to be considered and even practical solutions like hairstyling, wigs and tattooing may be discussed.

As we age, we can all expect some degree of hair loss but for some this hormone related thinning, otherwise known as male or female pattern baldness, can be accelerated. Whilst difficult to manage, strategies exist to slow down or stay the loss, but action must be taken quickly.
