Generalised Itch

Anyone who has suffered from persistent itch will tell you that the level of suffering it causes can be worse than pain. Many primary dermatological conditions are itchy, but there is another group of patients for whom this symptom exists without the underlying rash. For this group of people, a thorough medical and medication history must be taken and a number of investigations should be performed to rule out associated illnesses of the thyroid, kidney, liver and blood. Undetected infection and malignancy must also be excluded. If a cause of the itch can be identified it should hopefully resolve with appropriate treatment. If not, there are topical and oral medications available as well as phototherapy.
