Slip! Slop! Slap! - Sun protection for pre-schoolers
Thanks to the efforts of the Anti-Cancer Council of Victorias
SunSmart program, more and more Victorians are realising the importance
of sun protection.
And it is not only individuals that are Slip! Slop! Slapping to
reduce their risk of skin cancer. Councils, community groups, employers
and schools are introducing comprehensive sun protection policies
to ensure their clients as a whole, are protected.
School and kindergarten staff too, are realising the benefits of
developing and introducing simple strategies and concepts to protect
children, parents and workers at their facilities.
Teachers and carers of students and pre-schoolers have a duty of
care to protect children from undue harm. This includes exposure
to harmful solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation. They also have an additional
responsibility to protect their children as skin cancer results
from cumulative sun exposure you receive as a child. By protecting
your children now, you will be reducing their future risk of developing
skin cancer.
Protection strategies are simple, inexpensive and easy to implement.
SunSmart currently offers accreditation to all Schools and Centres
that implement policies that address the wearing of hats, the use
of sunscreen and the provision of shade. Policies must also address
the timing of outdoor activities where possible, to avoid outdoor
activities between 11am and 3pm (Daylight Savings or 10am and 2pm
at other times) and the inclusion of sun protection as an educational
activity.
Schools and Centres that attain SunSmart status are encouraged
to publicise their achievements to parents and to the wider community,
to demonstrate their commitment to the health and well-being of
children in their care.
If your school is not already a SunSmart School, call the SunSmart
Schools Program for further information on how to gain accreditation.
SunSmart can provide you with specifiallcy tailored information
and a sample policy for you to use as a guide when developing your
own sun protection strategies.
